The Broadway Flyer: September 2025

Welcome to the September edition of The Broadway Flyer! Curtis here from Broadway Limited Imports, and I’m thrilled to share the latest news with you. Train season has arrived, and it’s already shaping up to be an exciting one. We kicked things off with a brand-new N scale announcement.

In this issue, we’ll answer your questions, showcase fresh samples and renders, and highlight what’s next. Let’s jump right in!

A new N scale steam locomotive will arrive in 2026!

Last week, we announced our N scale 2-8-0 Consolidation locomotives. These locomotives are all new tooling and we're excited to bring small N scale steam locomotives to market. Something many of you N scalers have been asking for us to do for a while now.

Let's take a look at a few of the paint schemes we are offering in this run! Click here to find the full list of paint schemes.

ABOVE: Our Santa Fe model is a good candidate for some local freight or passenger trains!
ABOVE: Who doesn't love a good Daylight scheme!?
ABOVE: Southern Green and Gold looks sharp on these models!
ABOVE: The Rio Grande version is a close stand in for a C-48!

About the prototype: In the late 1800's, the 2-8-0 Consolidation quickly became a staple on railroads worldwide, offering a highly efficient alternative to the 2-6-0 Mogul. The Consolidations were capable of hauling trains twice as heavy at a fraction of the cost - - they revolutionized freight transportation.

Initially, only a few railroads adopted the design when Baldwin first introduced it. However, its reputation soared when the Pennsylvania Railroad made it their primary freight locomotive in 1875. In total, over 33,000 Consolidations were built in the U.S., with 12,000 exported and 21,000 serving domestically. The 2-8-0 wheel arrangement was also used in Australia, Canada, Finland, New Zealand, South Africa and many other countries around the world.

Today many Consolidations are preserved with a few still operating in excursion service. One of the most notable is the Southern Railway Ks-1 class No. 722, which was run in excursion service until 1985, and is now being restored by the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad.

Our first production run of these newly tooled Consolidation locomotives includes eight different railroad versions, plus one unlettered model for those who want to customize their own railroad. Models with the Paragon4 Sound/DC/DCC decoder feature working smoke, while models with Stealth boards are DCC-Ready and come with an 8-ohm speaker already installed. Next18-compatible decoders can be easily added to these boards for even more control and features.

October’s got a lot in store—alongside our always-popular Heavyweight passenger cars, we’re rolling out two iconic steam locomotives. First up: the HO scale de-skirted SP GS-4 Northerns! There are lots of versions to pick from, and while you can check out the complete list online, here are a few of the highlights we think you’ll love.

ABOVE: May 2001 saw Southern Pacific 4449 in action on a rare and memorable two-day excursion. The route traced the north shore of the Columbia River from Portland to Kennewick before continuing northwest to Yakima for an overnight layover—a treat for fans and photographers alike.

Our model accurately represents the locomotive in it's 2001 appearance, featuring the re-lettered locomotive following it's duties pulling several BNSF Employee Appreciation Specials in the year 2000.
ABOVE: For those modeling the Southern Pacific during the transition from steam to diesel, these locomotives are a perfect fit—both historically and visually. This is a image of a few features and road specific details on our model. In addition to this half daylight version, we are also bringing an all black version to market.

Last but definitely not least—we’re thrilled to share our very first production run of the Santa Fe 3460 Class “Super Hudsons”! Arriving in Spring 2026, these locomotives feature all-new tooling and details specific to their road and era. With the help of members from the Santa Fe Historical Society, we’ve made sure these models capture the look and spirit of the real thing.

ABOVE: One of the most remarkable achievements in steam railroading came in December 1937, when locomotive #3461 set a world record for the longest non-stop run by a steam engine—traveling an astonishing 2,227 miles from Los Angeles to Chicago with no maintenance beyond five refueling stops. It was assigned to the Fast Mail Express, showcasing both the reliability and endurance of this class.

ABOVE: Only one of these locomotives was preserved and it remains on display in Topeka, Kansas. Efforts are currently underway by volunteers from the nonprofit Kaw Valley Rail Heritage Conservancy to relocate the locomotive to a new site in Topeka in the future.

Whether you're modeling Santa Fe passenger service in its prime or looking for a striking steam locomotive with a story to tell, the 3460 Class is a perfect addition to your HO scale roster!

In addition to the SD45's, we've also received some 3D printed samples of our upcoming Union Pacific "Lone Star" and "Lincoln" from our friends at 3D Central. These samples will be making their way to shows in the coming weeks!

We expect these cars to arrive in stores around February! Some dealers still have units available for pre-order—but don’t wait too long. Just like our “Kenefick” cars, we anticipate these will be completely sold out before they even go into production.

Customer Q&A:

The last section of The Broadway Flyer is all about you, our amazing customers! Every month, we reach out through social media and email, inviting you to send in your questions—and you never disappoint. This month was a twist as we asked for your questions for our service department. David here has been excited to answer your questions! David take it away!

David: Thanks Curtis! I'm excited to get started!

Q: Can we have some “how to” guides on accessing some of the Hybrid Vanderbilt tenders? My UP 4-12-2 has had work stalled on it as I can’t access the Paragon 3 decoder to remove it. The parts diagram shows the water hatch area can be removed but it isn’t budging on my model." - James on Facebook

A: Each hybrid model will have a different method as almost all projects are unique. So there really isn't a generic "how to" guide. However, for the UP 4-12-2, if you pull up on the rear top of the tender it should come off. I've included a picture for you to see what it looks like.

Q: "Any tips for getting one of those little inspection cars you released with FDT/FDH many years ago running again?" - John on Facebook

David: I should preface this by saying I have not worked on one of these personally, but it would all depend on what was wrong but if it is DCC equipped you can set CV 30 = 2 to try and reset the model. The next thing I would check is the gearing. You will see it on the side of the engine on one of the rear wheels connecting to that wheels gear. Also make sure the motor wiring is intact and that the motor will spin when voltage is applied. If you have any other questions or need further support please reach out to us at techsupport@broadway-limited.com and we can try our best to help you out!

Q: "Why isn't it possible to release Stealth series steam locomotive models with smoke unit?" - Inad on Facebook

David: Without getting too technical, our smoke units do not work with aftermarket decoders so if we released them with the smoke unit you would still have to replace it with one that matches the aftermarket decoder you choose.

Q: "How do you remove the sideframes on the HO scale E8 diesels?" - Robert on Facebook

David: Good question Robert! You have to drop the truck completely from the engine by removing the shell, worm gear and worm gear cap. Unplug the pickup wires from the decoder or make sure you have enough slack to drop the truck. There are four tabs (picture attached) you can see when looking from above the truck. You have to pop these off to remove the gear cover. Once the gear cover is off you can remove the sideframes and pickup plates.

Q: "What's the best method/chemical to remove lettering from your locomotives?" - @travishandschug on Instagram

David: We try to stay away from recommending specific chemicals, because some can strip off more than just the lettering—they can also take the base paint with it, or even damage the ABS plastic. If you still want to experiment, there are lots of guides and tips online you can check out. Just know we can’t say for sure which product will do the trick without causing issues.

David: Thanks for all the questions everyone! If you have anymore questions, please feel free to reach out to us at techsupport@broadway-limited.com and we can try our best to help you out! Curtis, I'll send it back to you!

Curtis: Thanks David! On top of the service questions we received, our mailbag was still filled with tons of other questions people want answered!

Q: "Can you give a break down on what roads are getting the most product suggestion and which prototype of that road is getting the most requests?" - Joe on Facebook

A: We’re not able to reveal exact prototypes, but we can share a little insight into the requests we hear most often. Nearly every day, modelers submit to our product suggestion portal suggestions for Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, New York Central, and PRR prototypes. That doesn’t mean we’re ignoring other railroads or that we don't consider those railroads not mentioned—we have projects in the works for many lines outside of those five. But it does show where the biggest buzz is coming from right now!.

Q: "Have you all swapped completely to the brass hybrid thing or will there be more plastic models?" - Brett on Facebook

A: The choice to go with Brass-Hybrid or diecast models rather than plastic is for a few reasons. The biggest is because we receive a lot of very positive feedback from customers in regards to the pulling power of our steam locomotives. Brass and Diecast tooling is a major factor in increasing the tractive effort. For diesels we still offer them in plastic but are currently exploring a few other options for diecast diesels, aside from our HO scale EMD SD70ACe.

Q: "What is the possibility of making more of the Norfolk Southern business car fleet?" - Matt on Facebook

A: The business car market is definitely something we want to look into expanding. The possibility of more NS business cars is strong but we do not have a timeline yet for when they will be available.

Q: "Any plans to make Northern Pacific SD45s? 3617 still runs in Duluth." - Andrew on Facebook

A: Northern Pacific SD45's are on our radar for a future release of the locomotives.

Q: "Since it seems your roster for new N scale steam projects has changed, will you guys be looking into developing some small steam that would be way more versatile and suited to the typically smaller N scale layouts?" - Jaelon on Facebook

A: We are open to it! The requests we get for N scale steam are everything from Big Boys and Challengers to smaller hudsons and switchers. We work very hard to try and add as much variety to our N scale steam offerings. If our newest run of 2-8-0 Consolidations are popular for N scalers, we can consider other locomotive types.

Q: "Since the C&O greenbrier is being restored, are there any plans to do a rerun of the model? Any other Chesapeake and Ohio locomotives on your radar? " - @southsidemodelsmore on Instagram

A: It is a candidate for a re-run but we have not determined if or when it will be done. We do have some other C&O locomotives on our radar but we cannot share that at this time.

Q: "Hello Broadway, what are your guy's future plans for the Union Pacific Heritage Fleet passenger cars, and how soon are the 2066 power car and fox river coming out?" - @hunterbeach69 on Instagram

A: As of the day we write this, the Power Car and Fox River are estimated to arrive this December. However this is subject to change. You can check with our Delivery Schedule when models will be arriving. We try and update it several times a month. We have other UP business cars and other roads currently in the works. One of the other platform observation cars will most likely be released. Stay tuned to see which one!

Q: "Any new New Haven locomotives on the horizon? R-class 4-8-2? L-class 2-10-2?" - @keegantatum on Instagram

A: We do have a New Haven locomotive in the works! The New Haven R3a! Stay tuned for more information on this project at a later date.

That wraps up this month’s edition of The Broadway Flyer! Thank you all for your continued support—and keep those questions coming on social media and via email.

Have a spooky October, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
Happy Railroading!

Hi, I think last year BLI was talking about another run of the SP Cab Forwards in the future. Is this still planned?
