NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT: Heavyweight Combine and Heavyweight Business Cars, HO scale

NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT: Heavyweight Combine and Heavyweight Business Cars, HO scale

This year, Broadway Limited is thrilled to introduce HO scalers to our sleek and stylish passenger cars. Drawing inspiration from our renowned PRR designs, these heavyweight cars promise top-notch quality for your customers' model railroads. Our lineup now includes expanded options for the PB70 Combine and Z74D Business Cars, along with new road names in our 5-car heavyweight set. Each car boasts exquisite detailing, precise paintwork, appropriate Pullman 2411 trucks, and authentic lettering schemes. They come adorned with separately applied features like handrails and antennas (where applicable), intricately designed interiors, and are compatible with both Code 83 and 100 rail tracks, with a minimum operating radius of 18 inches.

Expect these cars to arrive this fall, with an order deadline set for June 6th, 2024.
Founded by George Pullman in the late 1860s, the Pullman Company emerged as the epitome of the passenger train industry during the Golden Age of rail travel spanning the first half of the 20th century. Renowned for its luxurious passenger cars, particularly its sleeping cars, Pullman became synonymous with comfort and elegance in rail travel. At the zenith of rail travel, numerous railroads opted to outfit their entire fleets with Pullman cars, proudly boasting of their "All Pullman" equipped trains.

Typically positioned as the rear of a passenger train, these cars featured windows or a platform at the rear for passengers to enjoy the view. Beginning in the 1950s, American railroads widely phased out these cars as a cost-saving measure, eliminating the necessity to "turn" trains when departing from stub-end terminals.

In our first production of the Heavyweight Business Cars, we are basing our design on the PRR Z74D car. We are offering 9 prototypical paint schemes, 1 holiday scheme and 2 unlettered cars with Pullman Green paint. All cars will come with appropriate details and have Pulman 2411 trucks.

You can find out more about these cars, here.

Combines, as the name suggests, housed two car types under one roof, offering efficiency by reducing one car from the train. A common type was the coach-baggage, accommodating passengers and luggage. Often used on small trains and light branch lines in the later decline of passenger rail travel.

Positioned at the train's front, the car earned the term "head-end equipment," alongside locomotives and non-passenger units like the RPO (Railway Post Office) for mail transport. Combine cars, serving as coach-RPOs, placed the mail section ahead of passengers.

In our first production run, we are offering 8 different combines from 6 different railroads. We are also making 1 holiday scheme, and 1 unlettered car painted in Pullman Green. All cars will come with appropriate details and have Pulman 2411 trucks.

Invite your HO scale passengers to embark on a luxurious journey with our Pullman 5-car sets. Let them revel in the plush seats of our P70 coaches, unwind in style within the observation car, all the while ensuring their belongings remain secure in the Combine car.

The term "heavyweight" stems from the robust all-steel construction and grand dimensions of Pullman cars, beautifully replicated in our plastic models. Each set comprises 1 combine, 3 coaches, and 1 business car, offering a true-to-life representation of these remarkable trains.

In our first production run, we are offering 4 sets. Three feature prototypical paint and one is in our holiday paint scheme. All cars will come with appropriate details and have Pulman 2411 trucks.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the pictures of the soon to be released Broadway Limited’s 5 car heavyweight set. Just seeing the pictures of these super-great cars brought back 1001 memories from my childhood days riding these cars on the PRR from Washington, DC to New York and graciously pulled by a GG-1. You can bet they’ll look quite attractive on my HO layout when coupled to the dynamic GG-1 or an F-7A and B unit. Many thanks for making this old geezer feel as though I’m the President of the Company.

Hello, saw your interview on "What’s Neat This Week and that you are starting a line of heavyweight passenger equipment. As info, I have many drawings for SP, UP, C&A, IC, etc. passenger and steam locomotive equipment. (This was SP’s Mechanical Drawing File). I model in N-Scale and overall, there is nothing in good car types in this scale. Last was "Wheels of Time many years ago. Thank you, and be safe. Steve Peery

It would be nice, a 5 cars set for CSX

Np cars will be nice to mix in with lightweight cars and Diesel engines. I wish BL would consider doing the pine tree scheme For the Northern Pacific and more steam Era schemes instead of Diesel Era paint .
Great Northern Orient Express pullman green whould be a nice start too.
Toss in some wood express reefer cars too for each road.
Thanks.

BRAVO, but why don’t the other three cars in the five-car set have heavyweight trucks?
Plus if you release an Engine like the Blue goose, Royal Blue Cincinnatian, Ect. why would you not offer the Consist (Heavy weights) for that train. Also with Freight Steamers you should offer the Caboose to match that engine. Just a thought. There is still alot of transitionalists in the hobby out there!
