Initial tests were impressive, and between 1918 and 1923, the PRR built 598 Class I1s Decapods. They were the largest 2-10-0 steam locomotives in the United States, and they became the dominant freight locomotives on the PRR railroad system until World War II. Sometimes called \"hippos\", the I1s's were huge. Unfortunately, the large boiler size limited the amount of space for large driving wheels, and the result was a hard ride and hard work for crews. Their power was undeniable, and they remained in service until the end of PRR steam in 1957. Our model is of the sub-class I1sa locomotives.
